What is VAT exemption/relief?

What do we mean by VAT relief?

Those who are chronically sick or disabled do not have to pay VAT on certain products purchased for personal or domestic use.

All of our mobility scooters and wheelchairs are designed solely to meet the needs of those with a disability and are manufactured and certified as Class 1 Medical Devices. As such, all of our products qualify for VAT relief and can be sold without VAT.

Our products are therefore eligible for VAT relief if purchased for your own personal or domestic use but you also have to be chronically sick or disabled to qualify for VAT relief. For VAT purposes, you are chronically sick or disabled if you have a physical or mental impairment which has a long term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities or a condition that the medical profession treat as a chronic sickness/long term health condition.

You do not need to be registered disabled or eligible for any other benefit to qualify for VAT relief. You also do not need HMRC’s permission to declare you are chronically sick or disabled but if you are unsure you may wish to consult your doctor or other medical advisor.

Our advice on eligibility for VAT relief comes from our years of experience of manufacturing and supplying this type of product. We have also referenced government advice on the gov.uk website. If you are unsure of anything, please go to www.gov.uk/guidance/reliefs-from-vat-for-disabled-and-older-people-notice-7017 for helpful information on this subject, also known as VAT notice 701/7.

If you are making enquiries about a scooter or wheelchair, our friendly advisors will offer you all the help you need and will guide you through the VAT relief as part of the process. VAT relief on eligible goods also extends to spares, repairs, maintenance and accessories. Our advisors will offer any advice you need and if you are ordering via our website, the VAT relief process is included as part of the checkout procedure. If you qualify for relief, check the VAT exemption box and your order amount will be automatically adjusted according to the items in your trolley and their exemption status. If the items you are purchasing are for yourself fill in the relevant VAT exemption declaration fields when prompted. If you are buying items on behalf of someone who qualified for VAT relief, please fill out the additional buyer information fields.

We are very happy to answer any questions you might have about VAT relief and eligibility in relation to our products. Please call freephone 0800 107 5349 or simply use our general enquiry form.
