Three-Mobility-Scooter-Owning Brazilian Language Teacher With Disability Thrives In London Thanks To TGA

4th June, 2018

Merces Decastro, a characterful Brazilian language teacher living in north London, has continued to teach with a disability thanks to her ‘saviour’ mobility scooters from TGA.

Merces, aged 64, settled in the UK in 1986 and now lives in Camden. She has a lively and charming personality and owns three scooters from TGA to ensure independent mobility – a large Breeze S4, a folding Minimo Plus 4 and a car boot Zest Plus. These scooters are vital to her work and social life as Merces has limited walking abilities due to a blood disorder and reduced circulation.

She uses the Breeze, with all-weather canopy, to drive to her language school in Gospel Oak every day during the week which takes around an hour. Through this freedom she is able to continue teaching English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian to adults and children which she thoroughly enjoys. Living at home with carer assistance, Merces would be housebound without her scooters and regards them as absolute life-lines.

Merces explains: “When I took delivery of my first TGA mobility scooter it was the best day of my life! Previously I had owned two scooters from other manufacturers however they were so expensive and let me down. Now I have three small and large scooters, they are my true saviors, life would be a misery without them. When I send pictures of my scooters to my relatives in Brazil they can’t believe it – they have never seen anything like it over there! Owning these products is not just for fun, they are my legs and an absolute necessity for work, leisure time and attending Mass. From the bottom of my heart they have changed my life!”

Merces continues: “I find driving on the pavement easy in London, a piece of cake, especially as I have driven big lorries in Brazil. It’s so much easier to get around than in a car, I never get held up in traffic. On weekends I visit places such as Baker Street or Regent’s Park…I love being in London so much. I have lived in other countries around the world and they are not as accessible or organised as here. My Breeze lets me drive up to 30 miles on one charge so I always have ample power all day.

Merces concludes: “My scooters are everything to me. Burglars could take everything I own and I wouldn’t care but my scooters are a different matter. If you are looking for a trustworthy scooter, go to TGA, nowhere else. I would do anything for TGA as they have looked after me so much.”
