Inspirational Para-Dressage Rider Continues winning Streak Thanks To TGA Maximo Mobility Scooter

15th June, 2017

Emily Skerrett, 33 from Cornwall and talented disabled horse rider, has recently competed for England and won several Para National Dressage qualifiers thanks to her new horse Ella and folding TGA Maximo mobility scooter.

Despite living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and total wrist fusion, Emily has ridden since the age of 4 and now competes and trains horses six days a week. She runs two successful businesses and is the proud mother of two boys aged six and four. Her rare inherited condition means she has a variety of mobility challenges and hence needs assistance to walk.

TGA, the UK’s leading mobility scooter specialist is supporting Emily with a Maximo mobility scooter so she is able to manage her horses and attend equestrian events without having to struggle across large distances on crutches. This has helped Emily achieve better results through increased energy in the Dressage arena.

She has won her last two qualifiers for the Para National Championships and represented England (SW) in a home international where her team finished second. Emily has also qualified for the Elementary Silver Summer Regional Championships and the Medium Silver Area Festival. Over and above these competitions Emily continues to train hard for her ultimate ambition of the 2020 Paralympics and working towards qualifying for forthcoming international events.

Emily said: “My Maximo scooter helps both at home and especially at competitions where I need to conserve energy! It’s great for feeding the horses and even leading them around the yard and into paddocks. It can cope with bumpy ground and is quiet so does not spook Woody, Ella or Molly. I use it to carry water buckets around the yard and to take haylage to the horses. As it folds up I take it to all events in the back of my Audi Q3 or HGV horsebox and storing it is no problem. Sitting on my Maximo gives me chance to rest as my addiction to horse riding can be tiring – its only my scooter, medication, chips and fresh fruit that keep me going!”

Emily adds: “My ultimate ambition is still to compete at a Paralympic Games, with the next one being Toyko 2020. Last year I represented GB at 2* international for the first time and I hope to be able to do this again this year especially as my national qualifiers are going well. My new mare Ella is only young and relatively inexperienced but the judges have commented that she’s a horse to watch out for in the future, so I feel positive about our partnership and future together.”
