89-Year-Old Retired Lancashire Farmer Raises Orphanage Donations By Selling Potatoes On Ibex Mobility Scooter

20th November, 2017

Eddie Porter, aged 89 and retired farmer from Great Eccleston, has purchased a funky new TGA mobility scooter so he can continue selling ‘Pilling Potatoes’ to raise money for a Ugandan orphanage.

Eddie was originally from County Tyrone in Ireland and before retirement was successful in several careers including dairy farming, building and biscuit making. He met his wife Margaret when he managed a farm in Out Rawcliffe and since retiring they have both kept busy with various activities including selling potatoes. The Porters are friends with a bishop called Patrick from Africa who has visited their church several times. Patrick built and manages a Ugandan orphanage which depends on donations from supporters such as Eddie and Margaret. Due to walking difficulties Eddie needed a way to continue selling his potatoes around the village which led to purchase of a TGA Ibex mobility scooter. Eddie can now continue delivering his 3lb and 5lb bags of Pilling potatoes to all Great Eccleston locals and visitors.

Pilling potatoes are renowned for their quality as Eddie explains: “I know the land around here very well, the sandy soil near Morecombe is ideal for growing potatoes. This is where I buy my potatoes in bulk and then spilt into handy sized bags. I used to grow my own on my allotment until I had to give it up due to my bad heart and asthma. Once I have organised the bags and routed out any bad spuds, I load up my scooter and off I go to the village. I sell them to all sorts of people, they get quality Pilling potatoes at a very good price – any profit goes to Patrick’s orphanage. Pilling potatoes are the best. I sell to people at bus stops, in the high street or around the local area. My TGA Ibex scooter is really comfy, when I get back from my rounds I feel as fresh as when I went out.”

Margaret also uses their TGA scooter as she has arthritis and does not like travelling in the car. Margaret says: “Our new Ibex means I can get around the village on my own. We both have a good time on it and can also get round the garden and up the steep hill near our home. My husband didn’t tell me he was going to get this scooter, he just went out one day and came back with it. The scooter helps him save energy apart from his tongue that is! Thanks to our new wheels we can continue sending funds to our friend Patrick in Africa as he never turns away any orphaned child.”
