Daniel is a keen cyclist and runner and works as a mobility product consultant for TGA, the UK-leading mobility scooter and product specialist based in Suffolk. Last year, he signed up for the 2016 Chelmsford Marathon which is organised by The J’s Hospice. It was his first ever marathon and he was inspired to do something special for the charity, so he asked his employer to donate a lightweight and ergonomic StrongBack wheelchair and TGA kindly agreed.
The J's Hospice charity improves the lives of young adults (aged 16-40) with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families across Essex, in the comfort of their own homes. When Daniel delivered the wheelchair to The J’s, he was delighted to meet some of the hospice’s nurses, healthcare assistants and a patient. They were so pleased with the wheelchair that he decided to support them again – this time on his bicycle!
The Pedal for The J’s cycle ride starts and finishes at Admiral’s Park in Chelmsford on Sunday 30th April. Cyclists have a choice of three routes through the beautiful Essex countryside – 15, 35 and 50 miles - plus a new 2-mile, off-road Pedal in the Park ride for families with younger children on their bikes, trikes and scooters. Daniel has signed up for the 50 mile / 80 km ride as his latest charitable challenge and asked TGA if they would kindly help him to support The J’s Hospice again.
This time, TGA has agreed to donate a motorized Wheelchair Powerpack to The J’s if Daniel completes the ride. The TGA Solo Powerpack can be fitted to the StrongBack wheelchair that they have donated – this will provide a complete mobility solution that is easier for carers to use. The TGA Powerpack consists of a motorized unit and wheel(s) that help drive an attendant-controlled wheelchair forward so the stresses and strains of pushing are reduced for carers. All four models in the TGA Powerpack range are extremely reliable and ensure tackling slopes, uneven ground and kerbs when pushing a wheelchair is no issue at all.
Since 1985, TGA has supported the nation with the most comprehensive range of quality mobility scooters proven to deliver independence with peace of mind. From its friendly showroom in Sudbury it also provides a range of other independent living solutions including rise and recliners chairs, powered wheelchairs, bath lifts and stair lifts. This local connection has resulted in Daniel supporting the Essex based charity and comments: “I’m chuffed to bits that my employer TGA has once again kindly offered to donate equipment to The J’s Hospice – they are an ethical company always keen to support a good cause. The previous StrongBack wheelchair I presented to the charity was so gratefully received and is perfect for use with a motorized Solo powerpack. If I manage to complete the 80km Pedal for the J’s course, the charity’s patients and their carers will be able to enjoy the outdoors with more comfort and less hassle.”
Daniel adds: “I have been training for Pedal for The J’s since December and feel confident I can complete the route in 2½ hours. It will be tough but I have been practicing around Box Hill in Surrey which is the same hilly area Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins use for their extreme training routines. Through a combination of enjoyment and addiction to endurance events, I am ready to tackle this latest one and can’t wait to see everyone’s faces at The J’s Hospice when I hand over TGA’s second donation.”
