Daniel Salter, 30 from Foxearth near Sudbury and TGA Mobility Consultant, has successfully completed the Chelmsford marathon so that an invaluable TGA wheelchair donation can go ahead to benefit the J's Hospice charity.
Daniel has been a keen runner for several years and has competed in many endurance events. Before entering the Chelmsford marathon he conceived a different idea to help the chosen charity associated with the event, the J’s Hospice based in Colchester. The J's Hospice charity improves the lives of young adults (aged 16-40) with life limiting and life threatening conditions and their families across Essex.
Instead of raising donations through sponsorship he asked his employer, TGA Mobility, to donate one of its new pioneering StrongBack wheelchairs to the charity if he completed the course in less than 4.5 hours. The TGA Managing Director agreed to this challenge so Daniel then began his three months of training to ensure he would be able to beat this target time.
Daniel is a mobility product consultant for TGA Mobility based in Suffolk. TGA is a leading national specialist in the provision of quality mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Since 1985 it has also supported East Anglia with more wide-ranging mobility products so that independence can be achieved by many who are elderly or live with disability. Today TGA’s welcoming showroom in Sudbury provides a comprehensive range of mobility products including the new StrongBack wheelchair. The new StrongBack provides a higher level of effective lumbar support through a revolutionary contoured backrest. This is providing greater comfort for wheelchair users across the country and would greatly assist a disabled J’s Hospice service user.
With his mind firmly focused on the target time, Daniel managed to complete the Chelmsford marathon in a time of 4 hours 12 minutes. This time was an impressive achievement considering it was his first marathon and Daniel stopped to help a young female entrant who was ill during the race. TGA are now committed to their generous pledge of donating a StrongBack wheelchair to the J’s Hospice charity. Daniel comments: “I am chuffed to bits to have made this TGA donation offer come true. I found the race ok despite it being quite hilly and several long distance runners saying the course was tough. Saying that, the last three miles were pretty hard but I was determined to beat the target time set by TGA. This now means a local young adult with a life limiting condition will be able to benefit from owning one of the latest TGA wheelchairs. As several of my friends are disabled young war veterans, I really understand what a difference this StrongBack will make to the recipient. We will be organizing the presentation very soon.”
